Leshan & Mt.Emei
In the
distance towers the 71 meter high Giant Buddha of Leshan,
"the biggest Buddha in the world". This scenic area is an organic
combination of both cultural and natural heritages. Covering 2.5 square
kilometers of land, it has the Tang Dynasty Giant Buddha in the center,
with other scenic spots in the vicinity--Wuyou Mountain (Lidui) is hewn
out by Li Bing, Prefect of Sichuan in the Qin Dynasty; the ground of Han
Dynasty rock-tombs, Buddhist statues of the Tang and Song; Pagodas,
temples and architectural structures of the Ming and Qing, ect. The world
renowned 71-meter-high Giant Buddha is carved on the rock face, with nine
summits behind it and three rivers in front. The Buddha is well
proportioned and the carved lines flow smoothly. On both sides of its
throne are 90 niches with statues of art are valuable for researches and
attract more and more Chinese and foreign tourist.
Mount
Emei, located at Emeishan City, Sichuan Province, is a natural
scenic mountain with Buddhism playing its part. It occupies a special
geographic location, and it known for its majestic nature sceneries
typical topographic features, and well-preserved ecological
environment.
Even more remarkable are its being located at a transition
zone where the world's biota integrates, and its housing 3,200 species of
higher plants and 2,300 species of rare animals. These bestow on it
certain characteristics particular to the region. The Golden Summit,
3,077meters above sea level, offers four wonderful views: Sunrise, vast
expanses of clouds, "Buddha's light", and the evening glow.At the
center of Mount Emei, among dense woods and flowers, are the Elephant Bath
Pond, Cave of Nine Old Men, and the Hongchunping Mountain Glen. In the
past 2000 years, a rich heritage characterized by Buddhist culture has
been created and accumulated here.
Within the Beamless Hall of the
Ten-Thousand-Year Temple, a hall with outstanding architectural features,
towers a bronze status of Samantabhadra. Cast in 980 in the Song
Dynasty, it is 7.85 meters high, weight 62 tons and is one of the
important cultural relics of China. The Temple of Serving the Country is
the site of important Buddhist activities. The Tiger-Taming Temple, the
largest temple in Mount Emei, is surrounded with ancient nanmu. Mount Emei
is highly valuable in the study of history, aesthetics, in scientific
researches and the popularization of science. It is also valuable as a
tourist resort.
