Yangtse River

Famed for her great beauty and feared for the destructive power she reveals upon breaking her banks, the Yangtse River rushes from the cold mountains of Qinghai across China's vast hinterland to Shanghai and the East China Sea. Providing the life-source of some of China's most fertile land, the scenery along its banks ranges from terraced paddies and low plains to bamboo covered hills and magnificent gorges. With work to dam the river progressing rapidly, one of the world's classic river journeys is soon to be changed forever. Indeed, from mid 2003 it will no longer be possible to sail the full length of the river to Shanghai. The boats will stop (or start) at Nanjing and the final section will have to be flown, so this is your final opportunity to explore the Yangtse in its majestic entirety.
